A Simple Country Remedy: Daisy Water for Hay Fever & Tired Eyes

There’s a quiet joy in wandering the garden early in the morning, basket in hand, before the day has quite decided what it wants to be. The birds chatter, the kettle hums in the kitchen, and the lawn is scattered with little white daisies nodding happily in the sunshine.

Most people see them as lawn invaders. I see a free and gentle remedy gifted by nature.

Today I want to share one of the simplest country traditions I know — daisy water for soothing hay fever and tired, puffy eyes.


Why Daisies?

Daisies have long been part of old countryside remedies. They’re gentle, cooling and wonderfully soothing. When infused in hot water and left to cool, they create a mild floral rinse that feels beautifully refreshing on irritated skin and eyes.

Perfect for spring and summer when pollen is high and eyes feel scratchy and weary.


Gathering Your Daisies

This is the nicest part.

Head outside in the morning once the dew has dried but before the heat of the day. Choose a clean area of lawn that hasn’t been sprayed or treated.

Pick a small handful of fresh, open daisies — bright white petals and sunny yellow centres. Avoid any that look tired or nibbled by insects.

You don’t need many. A loose handful will do.

Pop them into a clean bowl when you return to the kitchen.


Making Daisy Water

This couldn’t be simpler.

You will need:

  • A handful of fresh daisies

  • A heatproof bowl or jug

  • Freshly boiled water

  • A clean cloth or strainer

  • Cotton wool pads


Method:

  1. Place the freshly picked daisies into your bowl.

  2. Carefully pour boiling water over them until fully covered.

  3. Leave the mixture to steep and cool completely.

  4. Once cool, strain out the flowers so you’re left with clear daisy water.

That’s it. Nature’s eye lotion, made in minutes.

Store in the fridge and use within 24 hours for freshness.


How to Use for Hay Fever

During hay fever season, eyes can feel hot, itchy and tired by afternoon.

Simply soak cotton wool pads in the chilled daisy water, lie back somewhere comfortable, and place the pads gently over closed eyes for 10–15 minutes.

It’s wonderfully cooling and calming after a day in the garden.


A Lovely Evening Ritual

I often do this in the evening with a cup of camomile tea nearby and the windows open to the sound of the birds settling down. It’s a small moment of calm at the end of the day — simple, slow and soothing.

Sometimes the old ways really are the best.


A Gentle Note

Only use daisies from clean, untreated areas and always make fresh batches daily. This is a mild, traditional home remedy and not a replacement for medical treatment if symptoms are severe.


There’s something rather magical about turning a handful of lawn daisies into a soothing little ritual. It reminds us that the garden isn’t just for growing food and flowers — it can also care for us in the gentlest ways.

And truly, any excuse to spend a few more minutes wandering the garden basket in hand is a good one.
