10 Simple Cleaning Hacks That Make Keeping Your Home Sparkling So Much Easier

I'll admit it—I would much rather be pottering around the garden or spending an afternoon on the allotment than tackling the housework. Sadly, the dust doesn't seem to care how lovely the weather is, and somehow the crumbs, muddy footprints and washing up continue to appear as if by magic!
Over the years, I've discovered that keeping a home clean doesn't have to involve expensive products or hours of scrubbing. Often, the simplest ideas work best, and many of them use things you probably already have in the cupboard.
Here are ten of my favourite cleaning hacks that help keep our home feeling fresh, without breaking the bank.
1. White Vinegar Is a Wonderful Cleaner
A bottle of white vinegar is one of the hardest-working items in my cleaning cupboard.
It's brilliant for removing limescale from taps, freshening shower screens and making windows sparkle. Simply mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle, spray onto glass or bathroom surfaces, leave for a minute or two and wipe away with a microfibre cloth.
Don't worry—the vinegar smell disappears once it's dry.
2. Bicarbonate of Soda Freshens Almost Everything
If there's one cupboard staple I wouldn't be without, it's bicarbonate of soda.
Sprinkle a little into trainers, bins or even the bottom of your kitchen bin before adding a fresh liner to help absorb unpleasant odours.
It's also excellent for cleaning sinks and stainless steel without scratching.
3. Clean As You Cook
One habit that has transformed my kitchen is cleaning while dinner is bubbling away.
Instead of waiting until after we've eaten, I wash bowls, wipe worktops and load the dishwasher while things are simmering.
By the time dinner is ready, most of the cleaning has already been done, leaving far more time to relax afterwards.
4. Use Lemons to Freshen the Kitchen
Before throwing away a squeezed lemon, put it to work.
Rub half a lemon over wooden chopping boards to help freshen them naturally, or place lemon slices in a bowl of hot water before microwaving for a couple of minutes. The steam helps loosen dried-on food, making the microwave much easier to wipe clean.
It leaves the kitchen smelling wonderfully fresh too.
5. Keep Microfibre Cloths Handy
One of the best investments I've made is having several microfibre cloths dotted around the house.
They trap dust beautifully with very little cleaning spray needed and can simply be washed and used again.
They're kinder to both the environment and your purse.
6. Make Your Bed Every Morning
It sounds almost too simple to include, but making the bed instantly makes a bedroom feel tidier.
Even if nothing else gets done that day, walking into a neat bedroom in the evening somehow makes the whole house feel calmer.
Sometimes it's the smallest jobs that have the biggest impact.
7. Tackle One Room at a Time
Rather than looking at the whole house and wondering where to begin, I choose one room.
Perhaps it's just the bathroom today, or maybe the sitting room.
Breaking cleaning into smaller tasks makes it feel far less overwhelming and much easier to fit around everyday life.
8. Baskets Hide Everyday Clutter
No matter how organised we try to be, there's always a collection of bits and pieces that seem to gather.
A few attractive baskets can quickly tidy away magazines, dog leads, knitting, children's toys or gardening gloves, making a room feel organised in minutes.
Sometimes the simplest storage solutions are the most effective.
9. Open the Windows
Even on cooler days, opening the windows for ten minutes can completely transform the feeling of your home.
Fresh air helps remove cooking smells, reduces condensation and leaves rooms feeling brighter and fresher.
There's something wonderfully uplifting about letting the Dorset breeze drift through the house.
10. Spend Just Ten Minutes Each Day
Perhaps my favourite cleaning hack of all is setting a timer for just ten minutes.
It's amazing how much can be achieved in such a short time.
You might vacuum one room, wipe the kitchen surfaces, clean the bathroom sink or fold the washing.
Ten minutes never feels like a chore, but by the end of the week those small bursts of effort really add up.
A Home That Feels Lived In
I've long since accepted that my home will never look like the pages of a glossy interiors magazine.
There are muddy gardening boots by the back door, seed packets on the kitchen table during spring, and the occasional bunch of sweet peas sitting proudly in a jam jar.
And that's exactly how I like it.
A clean home isn't about perfection. It's about creating a space that feels welcoming, comfortable and lived in—a place where family and friends feel instantly at ease.
Sometimes the best homes aren't the spotless ones. They're the ones filled with warmth, laughter, fresh flowers from the garden and perhaps a homemade cake waiting on the kitchen table.
After all, that's what home is really about.
