This is a collaborative post.

The sun is still out and keeping us warm, but sadly, it won’t be long until it goes down and is replaced with the wind & rain. Winter is upon us, which means getting your cosy blankets out, thick duvet set ready, and heating ready to be turned on to full blast.

Winter is a time of the year which can be lovely - cosy nights in with a hot chocolate - but it can also be miserable - walking in the rain and getting cold. To make it less miserable at home, there are a few things you can do to prepare yourself. A little effort now can save you from a lot of hassle later on, whether that's checking your roof tiles, getting your windows checked or testing your heating.

Keep on reading for our guide on preparing your home for the winter.

Checking your roof tiles

A good place to start, whilst the weather is nice, is checking your roof tiles. Make sure there aren’t any cracks or gaps in them, as these could cause leaks to seep into your home. If when inspecting, you come across any damage, see if there are any fixes you can do (YouTube is great for this), or if not, think about getting a professional in to redo your roof and make it safe and reliable.

Testing your heating

Over the summer months, you won’t have been using your heating. When your heating isn’t used for a sustainable amount of time, this can cause issues in your heating system (hopefully not yours). Before winter arrives, run a few checks on your heating to ensure it’s working as it should. If it doesn’t, this gives you enough time to get a professional in to fix any issues that are occurring.

Blankets and a thick duvet

Wash all your blankets and dust down your thick duvet, which you have in the cupboard. When winter is here, there is nothing cosier than snuggling under a blanket when it gets cold. When you go to bed, in the really cold months, you may want to use a thick duvet set. This way, you are all snug as you sleep. If you haven’t got a thick duvet, consider getting one that is around 10.5 tog as this will be really thick and warm. If you have a partner who likes to sleep in a thin duvet during the winter, you can get hald and half duvets where one side is around a 4.5 tog and then the other side anything up to a 10.5 tog - this way you are both happy and comfortable when sleeping.

When you are prepared and organised, you will hopefully have no issues when winter arrives. What preparations will you be doing to get your home ready? What do you think is the most important thing to do? Which of the above tips did you find most useful? Let us know in the comment box below. We look forward to hearing from you.
