Grounding, What Exactly is it ? And What Are The Advantages ?

For some time now I have struggled with knee, shoulder and back pain. Although I put this down to age, I couldn't accept that this was my future life forever.

So I started to look at ways to improve my life and comfort, especially at night. I looked at my diet and I have to say with the allotment I eat a pretty healthy diet, but made a few adjustments.

 I had some physiotherapy for my shoulder and saw the doctor with regards to my knee pain. I was told my knee pain was caused by inflammation, (age related) and because I am unable to have steroids that there was nothing that could be done.

I could and would not accept that this was my lot, and that I would have to live with the pain that was restricting me from taking long walks with the dogs, and doing fun things with my family. Yes I'm in my early 60's but I have a few miles left in me yet!


So I started to research online and came across grounding. Talking to friends I begin to realize that in our fast-paced, tech-saturated world, people are constantly seeking ways to restore balance, improve sleep and boost overall wellness, I was not alone.


One wellness trend that has been gaining attention is grounding, also called earthing. While walking barefoot on grass or sand is a natural way to connect with the earth’s surface, many people are turning to grounding sheets—special bed sheets designed to simulate that connection while you sleep.

 I had to find out more,... like what exactly are grounding sheets? and what benefits do they offer?

Here is what I have discovered and would love to share with you!


Grounding sheets are bedding products woven with conductive materials like silver or carbon fibres. When plugged into a grounding port, this can be a electrical socket (or used with a grounding rod outdoors), these sheets transfer the earth’s natural electrons into your body while you sleep.

 The idea is simple: by reconnecting with the earth’s natural energy, you may reduce stress on the body caused by constant exposure to modern electronics, synthetic flooring and artificial light.


I soon realised that there were various company and price ranges available. I needed to be sure I was getting myself a good quality product that would last. Yes there were some very cheap options but when I delved deeper it became apparent the effects didn't last as the conductor material used were of poor quality. Then I found Earthing Revolution and after reading their feed back on review sights I knew I had found a quality product at a fair price that was going to last.

I contacted Jen at Earthing Revolution and she was so helpful and informative, I instantly knew I was in safe hands.


My order was placed, one grounding sheet a mat for under my desk and some grounding patches to target my shoulder and lower back pain when sitting in the evenings.

It has now been over a month since I started grounding and here is what I have found.

1. Improved Sleep Quality

My first experience was falling asleep faster and waking up feeling more refreshed. The theory is that grounding helps regulate your circadian rhythm by reducing night time cortisol levels and improving melatonin production. Better sleep equals better mood, sharper focus, and more energy throughout the day. And boy did it work, getting up in the morning was a revaluation as I didn't have the stiffness of joints I would normally experience, where it would take me a few minutes to get moving. My energy levels where defiantly up and I had the spring back in my step!


2. Reduced Inflammation and Pain Relief

Some studies suggest that grounding may help reduce inflammation in the body. By balancing free radicals with a steady flow of electrons from the earth, grounding could alleviate chronic pain, joint stiffness, and muscle soreness. Athletes, in particular, have found grounding sheets helpful for speeding up post-exercise recovery. I'm no athlete but my shoulder , knee and back pain have improved immensely to the degree that before getting my Earthing Revolution products I was taking pain relief daily and last thing at night and now I rarely take anything!


3. Lower Stress and Anxiety Levels

I have defiantly felt more relaxed and generally happier and more chilled and at first I put this down to better sleep but then read that high cortisol—the body’s primary stress hormone—can disrupt sleep, digestion, and overall health and grounding has been shown in preliminary research to normalize cortisol patterns, leading to a calmer nervous system and a greater sense of relaxation.


4. Better Circulation and Heart Health

Some evidence also suggests grounding may help improve blood viscosity (how easily blood flows). This may benefit cardiovascular health and overall circulation, potentially reducing risks linked to sluggish blood flow or clotting. And although I cannot say I can feel this, it makes so much sense.


5. Convenience and Accessibility

Someone said to me, why don't you just walk on the grass then!? While walking barefoot on grass or sand can be grounding, it’s not always practical, I work as a Hypnotherapist so I don't get the time to just stand barefoot in my garden or allotment — Grounding sheets make it easy for me to connect with the earth’s energy while sleeping, without any extra effort.


  1. This is something I didn't expect

My husband has reported like me that he is sleeping better and also no long struggling with stiff joints in the morning and he was the biggest sceptic of all time. But the best of the best ( drum roll please) is that he has stopped snoring!! I am both amazed and rather grateful too!

  • Grounding sheets aren’t a magic cure, and more scientific research is still needed to fully understand their effects.

  • They should be seen as part of a holistic lifestyle that includes good nutrition, exercise, and stress management.

  • If you’re managing chronic conditions, always consult with your healthcare provider before making changes to your wellness routine.



Final Thoughts

Sleeping on a grounding sheet is a simple yet potentially powerful way to support your body’s natural rhythms, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being. I defiantly have no regrets.

Whether you’re seeking deeper sleep, faster recovery, or just a greater sense of calm, grounding may be worth exploring.

After all, sometimes the best medicine is simply reconnecting with nature—even while you sleep.
