Summer is a season full of sunshine, longer days, and outdoor adventures. .We have defiantly been feeling the heat here in Dorset. But while the sun brings fun and relaxation, it also comes with its own set of wellness challenges—think dehydration, sunburn, and disrupted routines. That’s why summer is the perfect time to check in with your body, mind, and habits. Here’s your essential guide to staying healthy, energised, and balanced all summer long.

1. Hydrate Like It’s Your Job

In the heat, your body loses more water than usual—through sweat, especially if you're active. Dehydration can sneak up fast and cause fatigue, headaches, and even mood swings.

Tips:

  • Aim for 8–10 glasses of water a day—or more if you're exercising or in the sun.

  • Infuse your water with fresh fruits like lemon, mint, or berries for a refreshing twist.

  • Keep a reusable water bottle with you at all times.

2. Protect Your Skin

Sun exposure is a big part of summer, but UV rays can damage your skin quickly. Protecting your skin isn't just about avoiding sunburn—it's about long-term skin health and preventing premature aging or skin cancer.

Tips:

  • Use SPF 30 or higher and reapply every two hours (or after swimming/sweating).

  • Wear hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing.

  • Avoid peak sun hours (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.) when possible.

3. Eat Seasonally and Lightly

Summer offers a bounty of fresh, delicious produce that supports hydration and digestion. Eating lighter meals can also help you feel more energized in the heat.

Tips:

  • Load up on seasonal fruits like watermelon, berries, peaches, and cucumbers.

  • Choose grilled or raw options over heavy, fried foods.

  • Try summer salads with leafy greens, quinoa, and lean protein.

4. Move Your Body (Mindfully)

Staying active is key to physical and mental well-being, but it’s important to adjust your routine to the season.

Tips:

  • Exercise early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler.

  • Swap the gym for a hike, swim, or yoga in the park.

  • Don’t overdo it—listen to your body and rest when needed.

5. Prioritise Sleep and Rest

Longer days and packed schedules can lead to burnout if you're not careful. Quality sleep is just as important in summer as it is year-round.

Tips:

  • Keep your bedroom cool and dark to improve sleep quality.

  • Avoid screen time at least 30 minutes before bed.

  • Try calming evening rituals like herbal tea, light reading, or meditation.

6. Stay Mentally Balanced

While summer often brings joy and adventure, it can also feel overwhelming with travel, social commitments, or disrupted routines. Make time for yourself.

Tips:

  • Schedule downtime—alone or with people who recharge you.

  • Try journaling or mindfulness to stay grounded.

  • Set boundaries with your time and energy.

Summer wellness is all about balance: staying safe in the sun while making time for fun, movement, nourishment, and rest. By tuning into your body’s needs and making small, intentional choices, you can enjoy the season feeling your best.

☀️ Breathe deeply. Drink water. Wear sunscreen. And enjoy every moment of sunshine.
